2007 Election Results

Best wishes for a great 2008 for each and every one of you! The American Dutch Bantam Society just completed its election of officers for 2008 and 2009. Your new ADBS officers are:

President: Kristi van Greunen, California
Eastern Vice President: LeJean Marshall, Michigan
Western Vice President: Craig Richardson, Louisiana
Secretary/Treasurer: Bill Frank, Michigan
District 1 Director: Steve Gould, Massachusetts
District 2 Director: Johnny Sprouse, Florida
District 3 Director: Laura Haggarty, Kentucky
District 4 Director: Roger Parker, Missouri
District 5 Director: Jean Robocker, Montana
District 6 Director: Sarah Spotten, California

We thank the outgoing officers for their service to the club: Wayne Gritter, Janet Davis, Dennis Pearce, and Carlton Sanderlin. Each of them had served for a number of years in their District Director positions. Therefore, thank you to each of you for donating your time and leadership.

All the ADBS officers lead busy lives in addition to their Dutch Bantam hobby. The club is grateful for the volunteer service of its members for these positions in order to support and further our wonderful breed. Therefore, thanks to all of you who have agreed to serve in these positions and donate your time.

The future looks promising for Dutch Bantams in the United States. Congratulations go out to many of our members for their success with their birds in 2007. There were several shows throughout the country where Dutch ended up on Champion Row in 2007. It is very satisfying to see so many ADBS members winning with their birds all over the country. So ... "Let's Go Dutch!"

An Update From Your President, Kristi

In December 2006, the American Dutch Bantam Society lost our wonderful club president and good friend, Mary Hoyt, who passed away unexpectedly. Mary will be missed by many in the poultry fancy. Not only was Mary a great promoter of our beautiful Dutch bantams, she was also very involved in the clubs of other breeds. Mary was also very active in her local club, the Central Coast Feather Fanciers, of which whe was one of the founders. Mary was also a great friend of the youth in poultry. I know there are several young poultry fanciers in California (and probably elsewhere is the U.S., as well) who loved and admired Mary for her sharing of knowledge and beautiful birds. For those of you who did not know Mary well, she was always a gracious winner and a gracious loser. Mary was pleasant and friendly to everyone she met.

It was fortunate for our club that Mary was able to attend the memorable Crossroads of America show in Indianapolis in November 2006, so that members who had not previously met Mary could get to meet her there. Many of you may know that if it were not for Mary, we probably would not have gotten the Blue Cream Light Brown Dutch variety approved by the ABA and APA at the Indianapolis show and the Cream Light Brown Dutch variety approved by the ABA, also at that show. There were obviously others who were very much involved in making this happen, but it was Mary's behind the scenes work and conversations with the ABA and the APA that made the qualifying meets a reality. Mary's local club, the Central Coast Feather Fanciers, is sponsoring the color drawing of the BCLB variety for the APA Standard in Mary's name. Mary should therefore be remembered long into the future for her part in making this beautiful new variety an accepted variety that can now end up on champion rows throughout the U.S.

Due to Mary's passing, our club needed a new president to take over. As laid out in the ADBS Constitution, since the two club vice presidents, LeJean Marshall and myself, took office as VPS at the same time and neither of us were Senior VP, we got together and agreed that I would step in and serve as president of the club. Since my moving into that position vacated the Western VP position, I have asked Craig Richardson in District 4 to step into the position as Western VP (as laid out in the ADBS Constitution). Thank you, Craig, for agreeing to step into the Western VP position. Craig has previously served as an officer in the club and is familiar with the workings of the club.

Mary was a good friend to me and it is still hard for me to believe that I will no longer get to visit with her at each show I attend. Mary was such a wonderful woman and wonderful president of our club, it will be hard to follow and step into her shoes to serve as president as graciously as Mary did.

Results of the Qualifier

The Blue Cream Light Brown and the Cream Light Brown were approved for entry into the Standard at the Crossroads of America National Show held at the Indianapolis State Fairgrounds on November 17, 18, 19, 2006.

The BCLB was approved for acceptance in both APA and ABA. The CLB was accepted into the ABA, it is already in the APA. Descriptions will be the same on both in the APA and ABA Standards There were 275 Dutch shown, biggest number we believe ever shown in US.

It is a joyous day for all ADBS members.

Re Qualifying Show at Indianapolis, IN - Nov 2006

We have been approved to hold an ABA qualifier for the Cream Light Brown at the Crossroads of America National Show at Indianapolis, Indiana in November. We have also been approved to hold an APA qualifier for the Blue Cream Light Brown at the same show. Both of these have been a long time coming, and we need to thank Mary Hoyt, Jean Robocker, and Ric Ashcraft for their hard work in making both of these qualifiers possible.

For the Cream Light Brown qualifier, the ABA requires that we enter 25 Cream Light Browns from 5 different breeders spread across Cocks, Hens, Cockerels, and Pullets. The entries need to be representative of the standard that we submitted. For the Blue Cream Light Brown, the APA requires that we enter 50 Blue Cream Light Brown from 5 different breeders spread across Cocks, Hens, Cockerels, and Pullets.

To make sure that we have enough entries, the club is asking that you forecast what numbers of Cream Light Browns and Blue Cream Light Browns that you think you will enter for this show. Although it is late to start breeding for this show, it may be possible to have some young pullets be ready for the show. I have attached a form for you to fill out and return to me. If you wish, you can email me at bssmagfr1@aol.com with the information requested on the form. We’ve worked too long and hard to not make the numbers required for these varieties. The club greatly appreciates your assistance in this matter.

On a related note, the club has to submit the list of awards that will be offered at the Crossroads of America National Show. I am suggesting the following awards be sponsored for the Dutch breed at this show.

OPEN:
$50.00 sponsorship for the following:
Best of Breed
Reserve of Breed
3rd Best
4th Best
5th Best

$25.00 sponsorship for the following:
Best Trio
Best Display
Best Variety for:
   Light Brown
   Blue Light Brown
   Cream Light Brown
   Blue Cream Light Brown
   Silver
   Black
   All other Varieties

JUNIOR SHOW: $25.00 sponsorship for the following:
Best of Breed
Reserve of Breed
Best trio
Best Variety for:
   Light Brown
   Cream Light Brown
   All other Varieties
Highest placing in showmanship using a Dutch Breed

The above mentioned winners will be presented with a wine glass with a painting of a Dutch variety on the glass and a cash award. The glasses will be painted by Jennifer Spotten who is a member of the club. The amount of the cash award will be dependent upon the amount of money received for sponsorship. If you do not want to sponsor an award, you can make a donation of any amount to help cover the awards. Or, if you wish to sponsor an award not listed above, please let me know and I will add it to the list. To make the deadline for the show catalog, please respond to me no later than June 15th. Your generosity and assistance in this matter is greatly appreciated, and will help support the Dutch participation in this show.

Listed below are two forms: one for the number of Dutch that you hope to exhibit at the National show and one for the sponsorship of awards at the show. Please fill them out and return to me by June 15th.

Qualifying of Birds

It is finally official ! ! !

There will be an APA qualifying meet for the BCLB at Indianapolis (Crossroads of America Show Nov. 17-19, 2006. ) I will have more info in the next messages as to the number of exhibitors, birds, sexes, etc., trophies and awards. No mention of an ABA qualifying meet for the BCLB, though.

Then there will also be an ABA Qualifying Meet for the CLB at Indianapolis also. So we finally know these are going to happen.

It is great pleasure I can finally announce this, and I want to thank everyone who helped make it happen... Hurrah ! ! ! Hurrah ! ! !

Indianapolis Show

Dear Members,

I wish I could tell you that all is completed for the qualifying of the CLB in ABA, and BCLB in APA and ABA. Things are looking very hopeful so that would be such great news! But as it stands now we are waiting for official word from the Standard Committees of both APA and ABA . I an told that this should happen after the committee meetings at the Colorado show, May 13 & 14th.

I know some of you members are going to that show and will probably hear about the results before I will, as I am unable to attend. So let's keep our fingers crossed and hope we will hear good news soon. Oh, and good luck to those who are showing at that show !
